Visas for Study in the UK

Three main visa routes for students, depending on age and type of institution.

Child Student Visa

Ages 4–17 · Boarding Schools

For international students aged 4 to 17 attending independent schools in the UK. This is the primary visa route for children enrolling in British boarding schools.

The application requires an unconditional offer from the school, a CAS, proof of financial means, parental consent and confirmation of accommodation. Both the school and the visa process require guardianship arrangements to be in place in advance.

Key documents
  • Valid passport
  • CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from the school
  • Financial evidence
  • Confirmation of accommodation and guardianship arrangements
  • Birth certificate
  • Written consent from parents or legal guardians

Student Visa

16+ · Universities & Colleges

For students aged 16 and over enrolling at universities, colleges and other licensed educational institutions in the UK.

The Student Visa allows study and, in certain cases, work during the course within the conditions of the visa. In some instances, an ATAS certificate may also be required.

Key documents
  • Valid passport
  • CAS from the educational institution
  • Financial evidence
  • Proof of English language proficiency
  • ATAS certificate (where required)
  • Parental consent for students under 18

Short-term Study Visa

6–11 months · Language Courses

Suitable for English language courses lasting more than six months but no longer than eleven months.

If the course is six months or less, the Visitor route is generally used. If it exceeds eleven months, a Student Visa is required. This visa does not permit work and cannot be extended as a long-term route.

Visas for Parents Visiting Their Child

For visits to your child in the UK and for parents wishing to reside in the UK during their child's education.

Standard Visitor Visa

For trips to visit your child in the UK. Suitable for short-term visits: seeing the child, attending school events, travelling during school holidays.

Stays of up to six months per visit are generally permitted. For families who visit regularly, long-term visas valid for two, five or ten years are available.

Key documents
  • Valid passport
  • Financial evidence
  • Confirmation of purpose of visit
  • Child's documents and proof of enrolment

Parent of a Child Student Visa

A dedicated route for parents of younger children, allowing one parent to reside in the UK alongside a child (typically up to age 12–13) enrolled at an independent school.

Important to know:
  • The visa is issued to one parent only
  • The parent is not permitted to work
  • The primary purpose must be accompanying the child
Documents required
  • Valid passport
  • Financial evidence
  • Child's documents and proof of enrolment
  • Proof of parental relationship

Typical Mistakes When Applying for a Visa

Most refusals and delays result from the same recurring errors. Here is how to avoid them.

Requesting the CAS Too Late

The CAS must be requested from the school or university well in advance — without it, the application cannot be submitted.

Wrong Visa Category

A Visitor visa is not suitable for full-time study. The visa type must precisely match the purpose and nature of the stay.

Problems with Financial Evidence

Financial documents that do not meet requirements in terms of amount, date or format are among the most frequent causes of refusal.

Expired Passport

The passport must be valid for the entire period of stay. Check the expiry date well in advance — particularly if the child is studying for several years.

Missing Consent Forms

For children under 18, written consent from both parents or legal guardians is required.

No Guardianship Confirmation

The Child Student Visa requires documentary confirmation of guardianship arrangements. Without this, the application will be refused.

Visa Extension

If a student's studies continue beyond the visa's expiry date, the extension process must be started well in advance — do not wait until the visa expires. Submission deadlines for extensions are strictly defined.

Changing Educational Institution

When transferring from one school, college or university to another, a new CAS may be required and documents may need to be updated. The visa status must be brought into line with the new institution. Always check the requirements in good time.

In many cases, yes — within the conditions of the visa and the course. The Child Student Visa has different rules and restrictions. Always check the specific conditions against current UK legislation.

Yes, but for many nationalities a separate Schengen visa will be required. This can be applied for from the UK, provided the applicant holds lawful UK residence status.
