Why guardianship is not a formality

Guardianship services hero image
  • Schools are not responsible for students outside campus
  • During exeats and holidays, students must leave school
  • In urgent situations, decisions must be made immediately
  • Families need a trusted person in the UK who can act without delay
Guardianship is more than a formality.

A guardian is a responsible adult who ensures your child's safety and wellbeing while you are in another country.

When a guardian is especially important
  • Exeat and half-term — students must leave campus
  • Illness, injury, or emotional crisis
  • Parents' meetings and consultations with school staff
  • Transfers — airport, school, host family
A formal requirement

Required under Student Visa conditions and the policies of most UK boarding schools.

AEGIS Gold is the highest accreditation standard for guardianship organisations in the United Kingdom.

Guardianship in the UK: a formal requirement

All international students under 18 are required to have a UK-based guardian.

AEGIS
Accredited

A guardian:

  • Represents parents in communication with the school and medical services
  • Acts in urgent or unexpected situations
  • Ensures the student's safety outside school

Guardians may be individuals or organisations. However, only AEGIS-accredited organisations are independently inspected against recognised safeguarding standards.
